William J. Harris papers, 1905-1916.

The collection consists of personal and political papers of William J. Harris from 1905-1916. His political papers contain correspondence while he served as private secretary to U.S. Senator Alexander Stephens Clay (1908-1909), correspondence relating to his term as State Senator (1911-1912), and records relating to his chairmanship of the State Democratic Committee including the Georgia campaign of Woodrow Wilson for president and correspondence relating to patronage and legislation. The personal papers contain legal and financial records dealing mainly with his insurance business. The speech files contain notes and drafts of two speeches Harris gave while Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission (1916). The collection does not contain documentation from Harris' subsequent term as U.S. Senator. Major correspondees include William Gibbs McAdoo, Hoke Smith, Carl Vinson, and Augustus O. Bacon.
